Power Generation Operation and Control

Course Learning Objectives 

  1. Learn the characteristics of generation unit input/output curves.
  2. Study the economic dispatch of generation units, learn the use of LaGrange functions and the Karush-Kuhn-Tucker conditions.
  3. Understand the use participation factors, transmission losses, penalty factors, and locational marginal prices.
  4. Gain a basic understanding of linear programming and its application to economic dispatch.
  5. Learn how generating units are committed to meet load over the hours of a week using dynamic programing and Lagrange relaxation.
  6. Learn how gas fueled generation is scheduled to meet take or pay contracts, study fuel scheduling problems that involve transportation and storage.
  7. Learn how to schedule hydroelectric power plants and pumped storage plants.
  8. Learn the role played by the transmission system, learn the basics of power flow calculations, incremental losses, and penalty factors.
  9. Study power system security analysis, PTDF and LODF factors and contingency selection methods.
  10. Gain an understanding of the optimal power flow calculation, the incremental linear programming and interior point algorithms.
  11. How to break down the location marginal price into its three basic components.
  12. Understand the issues of using real time measurements and the state estimator, including bad data detection and identification and measurement observability.
  13. Understanding the issues involved in interchange if energy between companies, including brokers, power pools, and markets.
  14. Understand financial transmission rights contracts.
  15. Learn the basics of demand forecasting.
